How To Get Involved

How to Get Involved

As a project with the stated goal to build a community tool that is used by many developers and scientists beyond the project partners, we are very excited that we are receiving many requests by externals on how to use the WeatherGenerator and how to get involved in the development. As we have only recently started as a project (February 2025), we are still in the process to build a shareable version of the WeatherGenerator and a full documented prototype was originally only planned to be available one year into the project. However, this page outlines the possibilities to already engage with the WeatherGenerator, to get onboard and to explore, use, or develop WeatherGenerator infrastructure towards a machine-learned foundation model for weather and climate applications:

Website

Over the course of the project, the official WeatherGenerator webpage www.weathergenerator.eu will be filled with News, Events, Videos, Publications and other Resources. The website also includes a section on the topic of Gender Diversity which will play a significant role throughout the course of the project.

Development Blog

On our Development Blog, blog posts that will cover various aspects of the WeatherGenerator developments from tool developments to community engagement will be published. Blog posts can be found via the WeatherGenerator Linkedin and the WeatherGenerator website.

Mailing List

There is a mailing list available to keep you updated on all latest developments and news related to the WeatherGenerator project. You can subscribe easily via our website to receive regular updates directly in your e-mail inbox.

LinkedIn

The latest updates on the project including technical development, job postings and news from and about our Project Partners will be shared on the official WeatherGenerator Linkedin page.

External hackathons

Several hackathons will be realised within the project that allow users to bring their own applications to the meeting and to explore the use of the WeatherGenerator. Here, core developers will help the application developers to embed the WeatherGenerator into their coding framework and workflows. The application developers can also provide feedback on how to improve the design and quality of the WeatherGenerator. The first external hackathon is planned for 2026.

Services

Once the foundation model is in good shape, we will offer services to the wider community to support them making good use of the WeatherGenerator. This can be either to assist with the integration of WeatherGenerator into existing workflows, making use of the pre-trained decoders for e.g. forecasting, or helping with fine-tuning WeatherGenerator for a specific geoscientific task. With the WeatherGenerator services, we aim to promote the adoption of the foundation model and elevate existing machine learning solutions to unprecedented accuracy. We will start a lightweight call procedure for such service projects towards the end of 2026.

Github

WeatherGenerator is an open-source project and the developments are happening in the open space on Github. You can therefore get involved by cloning the code, pushing developments, or taking up some of the known code issues.

We are very much looking forward to engaging with you and your application in weather and climate science during the lifetime of the project.
